What is breast augmentation and how does it work?

Breast augmentation (also called breast enlargement, augmentation mammoplasty, or a ‘boob job’) is a surgical procedure that increases the size, fullness, and shape of the breasts using either silicone or saline implants, fat transfer, or a combination of both. During the procedure, a small incision is made — typically in the inframammary fold (under the breast crease), around the areola, or in the armpit — and the implant is positioned either above the chest muscle (subglandular), under the chest muscle (submuscular), or in a subfascial plane between the muscle and its overlying fascia. At Breast & Body Clinic, breast augmentation is performed by Mr Aftab Siddiqui, an NHS Consultant Plastic Surgeon with over 22 years of experience and a 5-star rating across 174 reviews on RealSelf. The procedure typically takes between one and two hours under general anaesthetic and is most commonly performed as day surgery.

What are the benefits of having breast enlargement surgery?

There are a variety of benefits that can be achieved through breast augmentation surgery. One of the most common reasons why women choose to undergo this type of procedure is to improve their self-esteem and confidence. Many women report they feel more feminine and attractive post their breast enhancement.

Other benefits include:

  • Symmetrical breasts.
  • A more uplifted and youthful appearance.
  • Restore body confidence post-cancer or deformities of the breasts.
  • Improve overall silhouette.
  • Improve the way your clothes fit.

Why Manchester residents choose to have a breast enlargement

There are many reasons why breast enhancement in Manchester is a popular cosmetic procedure. If you:

  • Feel your breasts are too small and want to increase bust size.
  • Have saggy, flat or misshapen breasts post-pregnancy, weight loss or with age.
  • Suffer from a breast deformity.
  • Have had a mastectomy or other breast surgery and wish to restore symmetry and fullness to your bust.

Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?

Good candidates for breast augmentation are women who are in good general health, are at a stable weight, have fully developed breasts (typically aged 18 or over), and have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve. The procedure is most commonly chosen by women who feel their breasts are too small for their body proportions, have noticed loss of breast volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding or significant weight loss, have asymmetry between the breasts, or wish to restore breast shape following cancer treatment or correct breast deformities such as tuberous breasts. Candidates should be non-smokers or willing to stop smoking for at least 6 weeks before and after surgery, and should not be pregnant or breastfeeding. During your free consultation at Breast & Body Clinic, Mr Siddiqui will carry out a physical assessment, discuss your goals, review your medical history, and confirm whether breast augmentation is the right procedure for your circumstances.

What types of breast implants are available?

Several different types of breast implants are available at Breast & Body Clinic, and the right choice depends on your anatomy, the result you want, and your lifestyle. Silicone gel implants are the most commonly chosen option — they have a soft, natural feel and come in a range of profiles (low, moderate, full) to suit different chest dimensions and aesthetic goals. Motiva Ergonomic implants, used regularly at the clinic, are an advanced silicone implant with a textured outer shell and a more natural movement than traditional implants. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water; they are firmer than silicone and any rupture is more easily detected. Implants also vary by shape — round implants give upper-pole fullness for a more accentuated cleavage, while teardrop (anatomical) implants follow the natural slope of the breast for a subtler result. For patients who want a more natural feel and reduced visibility of implant edges, hybrid breast augmentation combines an implant with fat transfer from the patient’s own body. Mr Siddiqui will recommend the most appropriate implant type, size, profile and placement during your consultation, supported by 4D simulation imaging that allows you to visualise the likely result before surgery.

If you are considering breast enlargement surgery in Manchester, it is important to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and expectations.

What is the difference between breast augmentation and a breast lift?

Breast augmentation and a breast lift (mastopexy) address different problems. Breast augmentation increases the size and fullness of the breasts using implants or fat transfer — it adds volume, but it does not significantly change the position of the nipple or the level of the breast on the chest wall. A breast lift removes excess skin and reshapes the existing breast tissue to raise sagging breasts to a higher, perkier position; it changes the position of the breast but does not add volume. Patients who have lost breast volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding or significant weight loss often have both problems — empty upper-pole breast tissue and sagging — and may benefit from a combined breast augmentation with mastopexy (sometimes called an ‘augmentation mastopexy’ or ‘aug-pex’). At Breast & Body Clinic, both procedures are offered individually and as a combined operation. During your consultation, Mr Siddiqui will examine your breast position, skin elasticity, and tissue volume, and recommend whether augmentation alone, mastopexy alone, or a combined approach will give you the result you want.

Will I be able to breastfeed after breast augmentation?

Most women are able to breastfeed normally after breast augmentation, though this depends on the surgical technique used and individual anatomy. Implants placed under the chest muscle (submuscular) or in a subfascial plane preserve the milk ducts and nerve supply to the nipple far better than implants placed directly under the breast tissue (subglandular). Likewise, the incision location matters — incisions in the inframammary fold (under the breast) or in the armpit do not disturb the breast tissue itself, while incisions around the areola can occasionally affect milk ducts and nipple sensation. At Breast & Body Clinic, Mr Siddiqui most commonly uses inframammary incisions and subfascial implant placement, both of which preserve the breastfeeding capability of the breast in the majority of cases. If you are planning future pregnancies, this is an important point to raise during your consultation so that the surgical plan can be tailored to preserve breastfeeding function as a priority.

Can breast augmentation be combined with other procedures?

Yes — breast augmentation is one of the most commonly combined procedures in cosmetic surgery and can be safely performed alongside several other operations under a single anaesthetic. The most popular combination is the mummy makeover, where breast augmentation (or augmentation with a lift) is performed alongside a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and often liposuction, addressing all the post-pregnancy changes a woman may want corrected in a single recovery period. Breast augmentation is also commonly combined with a breast lift (mastopexy) when sagging needs to be addressed alongside volume loss, and occasionally with arm reduction, thigh reduction, or labiaplasty for patients who want a more comprehensive transformation. Combining procedures is generally more cost-effective than staging them separately, requires only one period of recovery, and avoids the risks of multiple anaesthetic events. However, not every patient is suitable for combined surgery — total operating time, blood loss limits and individual health factors all influence what can be safely done in one operation. Mr Siddiqui will advise during your consultation whether combining breast augmentation with other procedures is clinically appropriate for you.

Are breast implants safe and how long do they last?

Modern breast implants are extensively regulated and considered safe for use, but they are not lifetime devices. Most manufacturers warrant their implants for a minimum of 10 years, and many implants in clinical practice last 15–20 years or longer without requiring replacement. The most common reasons for replacement are capsular contracture (where the natural scar tissue around the implant tightens), implant rupture, change in patient preference, or natural changes to breast tissue over time. Routine monitoring is recommended — typically with breast ultrasound or MRI every few years — to detect any silent rupture early. Risks of breast augmentation include infection, bleeding, scarring, changes in nipple sensation, capsular contracture, implant displacement and, very rarely, BIA-ALCL (breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma) — a rare condition associated with certain textured implants. At Breast & Body Clinic, only implants that meet stringent UK and European safety standards are used, and Mr Siddiqui will discuss all risks and the recommended surveillance schedule in detail during your consultation.

What is the recovery time after breast augmentation?

Most patients undergoing breast augmentation are able to return to light daily activities within 5–7 days and to desk-based work within 1–2 weeks. More physical activity can be resumed from 3–4 weeks, and strenuous exercise — particularly upper-body workouts, chest exercises and heavy lifting — should be avoided for at least 6 weeks. Immediately after surgery, swelling, bruising and tightness across the chest are normal and typically reduce significantly within 2–3 weeks. A surgical bra or compression garment is worn day and night for the first 4–6 weeks to support healing and help the implants settle into position. Patients are advised to sleep upright, supported by pillows, for at least the first 2 weeks following surgery to reduce swelling and discomfort. Final results emerge over 3–6 months as the implants settle (‘drop and fluff’) and any swelling fully resolves. Mr Siddiqui and the Breast & Body Clinic team provide detailed recovery guidance and follow-up appointments throughout your recovery — and Mr Siddiqui personally remains contactable by WhatsApp for any concerns during the healing period.

What is the difference between silicone and saline breast implants?

Silicone and saline implants both have an outer silicone shell — the difference is what they are filled with. Silicone implants are pre-filled with a cohesive silicone gel that closely mimics the feel of natural breast tissue; for this reason, they are the more popular choice and are particularly suited to patients with less natural breast tissue, where a saline implant might feel firmer or look more obviously implant-shaped. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water after they are placed, which means a slightly smaller incision can be used; in the rare event of rupture, the body safely absorbs the saline and the deflation is immediately visible, which some patients find reassuring. Modern silicone implants are designed so that the gel does not leak in the same way — even if the shell is breached, the gel typically stays in place and rupture is identified through routine MRI or ultrasound surveillance. At Breast & Body Clinic, both implant types are available, and Mr Siddiqui will discuss the trade-offs between feel, appearance, longevity, and rupture surveillance during your consultation.

How much does breast augmentation cost in Manchester?

The cost of breast augmentation in Manchester at Breast & Body Clinic starts from £5,500, with the final price depending on the type of implant chosen (standard silicone, Motiva Ergonomic, or hybrid implant-and-fat-transfer), the complexity of the procedure, and whether augmentation is combined with any other surgery such as a breast lift (mastopexy) or part of a mummy makeover. All pricing is transparent and the surgical fee covers the cost of the procedure, post-operative appointments and follow-up care. Separate fees apply for the anaesthetist and theatre/hospital stay, which vary depending on the length of the procedure and whether an overnight stay is required. Finance options are available to spread the cost over monthly instalments. The most accurate way to receive a personalised quote is to attend a free consultation with Mr Siddiqui at the Manchester, Chester, or Preston clinics, where a tailored treatment plan and detailed cost breakdown will be provided.

Postoperative Recovery

You will be given a general anaesthetic on the day of your cosmetic surgery. Once you have woken up and recovered sufficiently you will be allowed to go home on that same day.

Before you leave your surgeon will explain about using a support bra to aid in healing and how to care for your incision sites.

How long will it take to recover after breast augmentation surgery?

During the first few days to weeks, you will experience some discomfort and swelling. Your surgeon will prescribe medications to help with this. You should rest and take it easy until you have a follow-up appointment with your surgeon. After this, you can resume your normal activities according to the directions of your surgeon.

Full recovery can take 6 to 8 weeks, so it is important to follow your surgeons advice.

Frequently asked questions about
breast augmentation in manchester

Yes, a plastic surgeon can remove your implants through breast implant removal surgery. This procedure can be done for the following:

  • Removing the original implants and replacing them with new implants.
  • Repositioning the existing implants.
  • Removing the implants without replacing them.

Here at Breast and Body Clinic, UK we use medical-grade saline breast implants and implantable-grade silicone implants. We ensure that we only use the highest quality so you can be sure they are safe. Your surgeon is happy to answer any questions or concerns you have about the safety of your implants.

It is advisable to discuss with your surgeon what is a reasonable size in terms of your height and body shape and your expectations before you undergo surgery. It is not possible to predict with absolute accuracy the cup size that an individual patient is likely to be after this procedure. Your surgeon will endeavour to give you a result appropriate for your height and build, while keeping your preferences in mind.

At your first appointment we will perform a physical assessment and evaluate your goals and expectations. We can help you select the right implant that will give you the shape and size you desire, whilst still looking natural for your body type and size.

Breast enhancement is performed under general anaesthetic and may involve one or two nights stay in hospital. With some patients it may be possible to carry out the procedure as a day case. Occasionally a  drain tube is inserted into each breast to remove any blood or fluid that may have collected around the implant. This tube is normally removed within 24 to 48 hours and the patient is allowed home in a supportive soft brassiere. Following surgery there is some discomfort, which is more than adequately treated by painkillers. The breast can be bruised and swollen and appears larger in the first few days after surgery than the eventual size. In approximately six weeks the swelling and bruising settles and the final shape of the breast becomes evident.

A small dressing is applied to the suture line in the crease underneath the breast. Most patients are able to shower and change their dressing themselves at home. An outpatient appointment is made for dressing changes and any removal of sutures approximately one week after surgery. A review appointment is usually offered one to three months after the operation.

For the first couple of weeks, patients can experience discomfort while lifting weights or stretching their arms above the head. It is advisable to have help around the house and with young children during this period. The majority of patients are quite comfortable and able to return to work within two to three weeks after surgery. It is usually possible to return to normal exercise schedules including gym, aerobics and swimming four to six weeks after surgery. Be sure to check with your surgeon before returning to these activities.

Your surgeon will discuss the different shapes and types of implants that are available to you. You will be informed as to whether the implant will be placed above or below the pectoral muscle in the chest and what the long-term implications of having a breast implant are. Such problems may include capsule formation, leaks and ruptures, future mammograms, implications for pregnancy and breastfeeding and the possibility of revision surgery in the future. You will need another appointment about 2 weeks prior to your surgery, at no further cost, to have any questions answered following your first consultation.

Breast enlargements can have complications just like any other surgical procedure. These include bleeding, haematoma (blood clot under the skin or in the substance of the breast), infection, visible scars, asymmetry, loss of sensation in the nipple and long-term problems such as capsule formation, leaks or ruptures, and ALCL. Very rarely does an implant have to be removed due to a severe infection following surgery. If this happens the breast is allowed to settle and a new implant is put in three to six months after the operation.

No implant manufacturer guarantees an implant for life, however, 10 to 15 years is considered a reasonable timeframe. Patients are invited to return for an annual review to check the integrity of the implant and for significant capsule formation. If there is a suspicion of a leak or rupture the surgeon may advise you to have an MRI scan or an ultrasound examination to check on the integrity of the implant.

Every woman’s body is unique, there is no exact timeline for recovery. However, most surgeons agree that a full recovery can take on average six to eight weeks, and women may notice that they feel perfectly fine after about a week.

The decision to have a procedure is a personal one. A woman may enjoy the results of an augmentation prior to her decision to have a family. Implants will be unlikely to change the ability to breastfeed a baby. However, there is a slight risk that sensation could decrease following augmentation and may possibly interfere with the reflexes required for breastfeeding.

Implants are most often placed behind the milk glands, or under your chest muscle. This wont affect milk supply or stop you from being able to breastfeed. Occasionally you may have altered sensation that can affect being able to breastfeed, but most women don’t have issues breastfeeding post a breast enhancement. It is best to discuss your concerns with our surgeons prior to surgery.

In most cases, this type of surgery can be performed in less than two hours. Many clinics will recommend that you stay overnight, but in some cases, you can be in and out within a day. You will likely be given general anaesthesia for your procedure which can make you drowsy for the rest of the day.

Implants and augmentation procedures can stretch the skin either by adding implants or repositioning the breast tissue and may result in stretch marks. However in most cases, with normal-sized implants, it’s very rare to develop stretch marks. The best way to avoid this is to speak with your surgeon beforehand—they will give you all the information you need to choose the most appropriate size.

Our skilled surgeons aim to make their surgical incisions in such a way that any scars after breast enlargement surgery are minimal or barely visible.

Smoking cigarettes can increase the likelihood of developing capsular contracture and other malformations of the implants and breast tissue, as well as more prominent and irregular scars. Nicotine causes the tiny blood vessels in your body to clamp down. When they do, surgical wounds don’t get enough blood flow and delays the healing process. If you smoke around the time of surgery, you have a significantly increased risk of wound-healing problems and infections associated. We strongly advise you to stop smoking for 3 months before surgery and during your recovery period.

If the medication needs to be stopped, it should be done one to two weeks before surgery, so it’s important to talk to your surgeon. You can discuss with Mr Siddiqui, cosmetic surgeon at our clinic in Manchester, Chester, Preston. Call at 03334441362 or you can book an appointment for a breast enlargement consultation by filling in the booking form.

Some herbal remedies increase the risk of bleeding. This can interfere with the healing process and lead to post-surgery complications. Do not take any herbal medication for four weeks prior to surgery. Many health organizations advise that all herbal supplements be stopped 2 to 3 weeks before surgery. This includes the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

Patients should sleep upright for a minimum of 2 weeks following their cosmetic surgery procedure. If you want to know more about how to sleep after an augmentation you can read this post.

If you don’t wear your surgical bra, there is a risk of your implants shifting down or sliding to the side, this is known as breast implant dislocation. This will extend the healing process and may create critical problems, such as bruising, different shape of each breast or poor adhesion of connective tissue, which can lead to a variety of aesthetic defects, and so on. You should wear a compression bra for at least the first month after your surgery, but it can take up to eight weeks before your implants settle into their final size and shape.

After your augmentation, you can expect your breasts to be swollen, have a “tight” appearance, and sit higher on your chest. This is all normal and expected and settles as your body heals.

After augmentation surgery in the following weeks, your soreness will gradually disappear as you heal. Many women feel little to no pain within 2 to 3 weeks, aside from some mild tenderness. By the time you have reached 1 month after surgery, most of your soreness should be gone.

You don’t require strict bed rest, however after augmentation surgery you have to take it easy for atleast 2 days. It’s important for you to get up and walk around to help blood circulation and expand your lungs.

Breast enhancement does not increase your risk of cancer. In addition, implants do not delay the detection of cancer. In fact, breast implant patients who do get cancer have the same chance of obtaining remission, or being free of cancer for 5 years, as women without implants.

Most women will have some loss of feeling or sensation after augmentation surgery. For most women this lasts 6-12 months before returning to normal.

Women may start driving car after one week of surgery as long as they are not taking any pain medications and have done a safe emergency stop. Your surgeon will explain all the things you can and cannot do post surgery at your appointments.

Depending on the size of the implant, most women find no trouble in performing most physical activities following the surgery. It is unlikely that you will experience long term changes in physical functioning. Weight lifting or lifting heavy objects will not affect the implant once the area has properly healed and you have been given the all clear by your surgeon.
