What is blepharoplasty surgery?
Blepharoplasty surgery (eyelid surgery) is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the appearance of droopy eyes. It can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. This treatment removes excess skin and fat around the upper and lower eyelids for a more wide-eyed, youthful look. It can also improve the vision of individuals whose saggy eyelids may be obstructing their eyesight.
Upper eyelid surgery
For lower eyelids, the common issue is eye bags. These are typically caused by excess tissue and fat, sometimes accompanied by loose skin, resulting in tired and puffy eyes. A lower blepharoplasty removes this excess fat and reduces under-eye bags.

Lower eyelid surgery
With age, upper eyelids tend to become “hooded.” The skin in this area starts to sag due to excess skin and weakened eyelid muscles. An upper blepharoplasty targets this sagging, restoring a more open, alert appearance to the eyes.

Why have blepharoplasty surgery?
Many people choose to have eyelid surgery due to droopy eyelids or eye bags. This is often caused by ageing, but can also result from injuries, genetics or previous surgeries.
There are many benefits to this surgery:
- Rejuvenate the appearance of tired, aged eyes
- Reduce eye bags
- Improve vision by removing sagging eyelids that cover part of the eye

What is the process for having a blepharoplasty?
At Breast and Body Clinic, UK, our dedicated team is committed to helping you through every step of the way to a youthful, rejuvenated appearance.
Consultation and pre-surgery
At a free initial consultation, we will assess your eyes and medical history to determine the best strategy to rejuvenate your eye area. We will answer any questions or concerns you may have, provide in-depth details about the surgery and set a date for your procedure.
The surgery
A blepharoplasty will be performed using a local anaesthetic (a numbing medication) and a general anaesthetic (a medication to make you sleep)
Upper eyelid procedure:
- An incision is made along the eyelid crease
- The surgeon will then remove excess skin and fat and tighten the remaining muscle and skin
- The small incision is then sutured closed
Lower eyelid procedure:
- A small incision is made just beneath the lash line or inside the lower eyelid
- The surgeon then removes underlying fatty tissue and skin from under your eyes, and if needed will reposition or tighten the muscles
- The surgical incision is then closed with sutures
These two procedures can also be combined, with surgery lasting from 45 minutes to three hours. Most patients can go home on the day of their surgery.
Recovery and after-care
You will be provided with post-operative instructions that you need to follow to aid your healing and optimise the results of your blepharoplasty recovery.
- Rest for the first few days
- Sleep with your head elevated for the first few nights to reduce swelling
- Expect some swelling and bruising around your eye socket, which should improve within 1 to 2 weeks
- Take prescribed medication
- You can return to work within the first week
- Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for several weeks
Are there any risks or complications from eyelid surgery?
As with any surgery, there is the potential for complications:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- A visible scar

FAQs
How long does blepharoplasty last?
Eyelid surgery can be long-lasting if you follow the post-operative instructions. However, it can’t stop the ageing process and you may develop sagging skin or wrinkles and fine lines once more.
Should I have a brow lift at the same time?
Having a brow lift at the same time as an eyelid lift can be a way to further enhance the results of your surgery. If sagging eyebrows and forehead wrinkles are contributing to your aged appearance, a brow lift can provide a more comprehensive rejuvenation.
Can I wear contact lenses after blepharoplasty surgery?
It’s advisable to wait until your surgeon gives the all-clear before wearing contact lenses after blepharoplasty surgery, typically a few weeks post-operation. This precaution helps prevent irritation and ensures the delicate tissues around your eyes have sufficiently healed to safely accommodate the lenses.
