It is important to rest after any surgery, but for some surgeries, how you sleep is also very important to know about. When women have breast augmentation, they often are concerned about sleeping after surgery. In this blog, I will give some advice on how to sleep comfortably and cautiously after your breast augmentation surgery.

Why is Sleep Important After Breast Augmentation?

Sleep is essential to a healthy immune system and a speedier recovery. When you go to sleep, your body goes into a state of healing, blood flowing to the injured muscles and tissues, delivering oxygen and nutrients and allowing your body time to rejuvenate. This is also the time when growth hormones that stimulate tissue repair and prolactin that regulates inflammation are released. After breast augmentation, getting plenty of rest will also help to reduce pain.

Prepare for your first few nights of sleep with these steps:

After the breast augmentation surgery, you might find yourself often in pain while sleeping. There are a number of precautions that you need to take for the first few weeks so you can give yourself time for a quick recovery.

SLEEPING POSITION AFTER BREAST IMPLANTS

The best and most suitable position for sleep is lying on your back. This puts your breasts in a relaxed position, putting no strain on the chest and allowing the incisions to heal, and helping the implants to settle. Take soft pillows that help you to relax in the mentioned positions and, if possible, lie on a recliner bed that helps you to freely adjust your position. You should not sleep on your sides and on your tummy.

WEAR YOUR COMPRESSION GARMENTS

You’ll be given compression garments that will reduce swelling and improve your recovery. The use of a compression bra post-operatively following any breast surgery is a vital part of post-operative care; it accelerates your breast’s healing process and reduces pain and swelling associated with the procedure. In addition to these, the compression garment also helps in stabilizing implants following breast augmentation surgery. It also prevents excess sagging associated with breast reduction or implant removal surgeries. The use of compression garments considerably reduces the chances of bruising after surgery.

CALMING ACTIVITIES BEFORE BED

Avoid things that can disrupt your sleep, such as caffeine, alcohol, and screen time before bed.

Tips for sleeping comfortably after recovery

  • Wear a supportive bra when you sleep. This will help hold your breasts in place, ease tension on your incisions, reduce swelling, and enhance your recovery.
  • Take a warm shower (not a bath) in the evening for relaxation and to get to sleep faster.
  • Walk around regularly throughout the day. This helps with circulation and reduces the risk of developing blood clots.
