to Liposuction
What is liposuction and how does it work?
Liposuction (also called lipoplasty or body contouring surgery) is a surgical procedure that permanently removes stubborn fat deposits from specific areas of the body that have not responded to diet and exercise. During the procedure, a small incision is made in the treatment area and a thin hollow tube called a cannula is inserted into the fat layer. The cannula is moved back and forth to break up and suction out the fat cells. At Breast & Body Clinic, both traditional liposuction and VASER liposuction are available. In VASER liposuction, ultrasound energy is used first to liquefy the fat cells before they are removed, allowing for more precise contouring and gentler treatment of the surrounding tissue. The removed fat cells do not grow back — making liposuction a permanent solution for the treated areas, provided weight remains stable after surgery. All procedures are performed by Mr Aftab Siddiqui, an NHS Consultant Plastic Surgeon with over 22 years of experience and more than 9,000 procedures performed.
What areas of the body can be treated with liposuction?
Liposuction can be used to remove stubborn fat deposits from most areas of the body where localised fat accumulates. The most commonly treated areas at Breast & Body Clinic include the abdomen, love handles (flanks), inner and outer thighs, buttocks, upper arms, back, chest, and under the chin (submental area). Specialist liposuction services offered include love handle liposuction, abdomen liposuction, VASER liposuction, and 360-degree liposuction — which treats the entire circumference of the torso (abdomen, flanks, and back) in a single procedure for a fully contoured result. In most cases, multiple areas can be treated in a single session, though the total volume of fat safely removed in one operation will determine what is achievable. Mr Siddiqui will assess your anatomy during your free consultation and advise on the most appropriate treatment plan for your individual goals.
physique for a trim, toned appearance.
What are the different types of liposuction?
There are various liposuction techniques that are used by a plastic surgeon to remove unwanted fat deposits permanently.
- Traditional Liposuction uses a thin cannula inserted through incisions to suck out excess fat cells.
- Vaser Liposuction uses ultrasound technology for precise targeting and melting of fat cells before extracting the liquified fatty deposits.
When you meet Dr Siddiqui he will provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision about which type of liposuction is right for you.
These are the services offered at Breast and Body Clinic:
Why have liposuction in Manchester?
People choose to have liposuction in Manchester when other methods of fat loss have failed. Some people find that no matter how much they exercise or follow a healthy diet they cannot shift unwanted body fat or alter their body shape.
Liposuction helps by permanently removing fatty deposits from those stubborn places to reveal a trimmed, toned silhouette or face.

What is the difference between traditional liposuction and VASER liposuction?
Traditional liposuction uses a thin hollow cannula inserted through a small incision to mechanically break up and suction out fat cells. It is a well-established technique effective for removing larger volumes of fat from areas such as the abdomen and thighs. VASER liposuction (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) uses ultrasound energy delivered through a small probe to selectively liquefy fat cells before they are removed. Because the ultrasound energy targets fat cells specifically while leaving surrounding nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue largely undisturbed, VASER tends to cause less bruising and swelling than traditional liposuction and is particularly well-suited to precision contouring — including high-definition body sculpting where more detailed muscle definition is the goal. Both techniques are available at Breast & Body Clinic. Mr Siddiqui will recommend the most appropriate approach based on your treatment areas, the volume of fat to be removed, and the level of contouring detail required.
What is the recovery time after liposuction?
Recovery from liposuction is generally quicker than from more extensive body contouring procedures. Most patients are able to return to light daily activities and desk-based work within 1–2 weeks of surgery. More physical activity can be resumed from 3–4 weeks, and strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least 4–6 weeks. Immediately after surgery, it is normal to experience swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort in the treated areas — these typically reduce significantly within 2–3 weeks. A compression garment should be worn for 4–6 weeks post-surgery to support healing, reduce swelling, and help the skin conform to the new contours. Final results are not immediately visible due to post-operative swelling and typically take 3–6 months to fully emerge — with some patients noticing continued improvement for up to 12 months after surgery as the tissues settle. Mr Siddiqui and the team at Breast & Body Clinic provide detailed recovery guidance and follow-up appointments at our Manchester, Chester, and Preston locations throughout your recovery.
Is liposuction permanent?
Yes — the fat cells removed by liposuction are permanently eliminated and do not regenerate. This makes liposuction a lasting solution for the treated areas, provided your weight remains stable after surgery. However, the remaining fat cells in both the treated and untreated areas can still enlarge if significant weight is gained after surgery. This means that if you gain a substantial amount of weight following your procedure, new fat deposits can appear in the treated areas or other parts of the body. For this reason, liposuction produces the best long-term results in patients who are at or near their stable goal weight and are committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Most patients find that the improved contours achieved through liposuction serve as a positive motivation to maintain their results.
Can liposuction be combined with other procedures?
Yes. Liposuction is frequently combined with other surgical procedures to achieve a more comprehensive result in a single operation and recovery. It is most commonly combined as part of a mummy makeover, where it is performed alongside a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and breast surgery — all under one general anaesthetic. Liposuction is also regularly combined with a tummy tuck alone (without breast surgery) for patients who want both fat removal and excess skin addressed together. At Breast & Body Clinic, a dedicated Hourglass Tummy Tuck with Liposuction procedure combines abdominoplasty with circumferential liposuction to sculpt a defined waist. Combining procedures is safe for the right candidates and is generally more cost-effective than staging each operation separately. Mr Siddiqui will advise during consultation whether combining liposuction with another procedure is clinically appropriate and likely to deliver a better overall result for your individual anatomy.
Will liposuction tighten loose skin?
Liposuction removes fat but does not directly tighten loose or sagging skin. In patients with good skin elasticity — typically younger patients or those with moderate amounts of excess skin — the skin will naturally contract and conform to the new contours after fat removal. However, in patients who have experienced significant weight loss, pregnancy, or who have naturally lax skin, liposuction alone may not produce a smooth result and could leave loose folds of skin in the treated area. In these cases, additional procedures may be recommended. For loose abdominal skin, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) combined with liposuction may be more appropriate. Breast & Body Clinic also offers Renuvion® skin tightening — a minimally invasive technology that can be performed at the same time as liposuction to tighten the overlying skin using radiofrequency energy. Mr Siddiqui will assess your skin quality and laxity during your free consultation and recommend the combination of treatments that will give you the best result.
What is 360-degree liposuction?
360-degree liposuction (also called lipo 360) is a body contouring procedure that treats the entire circumference of the midsection — including the abdomen, flanks (love handles), and lower back — in a single operation. Rather than targeting one area at a time, the 360-degree approach creates a fully contoured waistline by addressing all the areas that contribute to the overall shape of the torso. This makes it a particularly effective option for patients who want a more dramatic transformation of their midriff rather than spot-treatment of a single area. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and recovery follows a similar timeline to standard liposuction. Breast & Body Clinic offers 360-degree liposuction as a dedicated procedure. During your consultation, Mr Siddiqui will assess whether the 360-degree approach is the most appropriate option for your anatomy and goals.
What are the benefits of liposuction?
Liposuction is a popular procedure in the UK because of its many amazing benefits.
- It is considered one of the safest cosmetic surgery procedures.
- Lipo is minimally invasive meaning no long recovery times.
- It is effective at permanently removing unwanted body fat.
- Regain your self-confidence and boost your self-esteem.
- Can easily be combined with other surgical procedures to remove excess skin post massive loss of weight and to improve sagging skin.
Am I a good candidate for liposuction in Manchester?
The ideal candidate for liposuction is someone who is in good general health, has a stable weight — ideally within around 30% of their ideal body weight — and has specific areas of stubborn fat that have not responded to a consistent programme of diet and exercise. Liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a weight-loss treatment; it is most effective for patients who are at or near their target weight but have localised fat deposits they wish to address. Candidates should be non-smokers or willing to stop smoking for at least 6 weeks before and after surgery. Underlying medical conditions that may be contributing to stubborn fat deposits — such as thyroid issues — should be investigated and ruled out before considering surgery. During your free consultation at Breast & Body Clinic, Mr Siddiqui will carry out a physical assessment, review your BMI and medical history, and confirm whether liposuction is the right procedure for your circumstances.

How does getting liposuction surgery in Manchester work?
Our friendly team at Breast & Body Clinic in Manchester are here to help you through every step of your journey to fat reduction. Here is what to expect during that journey:
Consultation
At your first consultation, Mr Siddiqui will conduct an assessment and discuss your goals for your cosmetic procedure. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions or voice concerns to ensure you understand exactly what the procedure entails.
Preparing for your liposuction procedure
Mr Siddiqui and his team advise you to stop smoking and cease taking aspirin, herbal supplements or anti-inflammatory drugs before your liposuction procedure.
Liposuction Procedure
You will be given a local anaesthetic in the treatment area and a general anaesthetic. Our experienced consultant plastic surgeon then makes a small incision in the liposuction areas. Special cannulas will then be inserted into the fat layers, and the fat will be sucked out before the incisions are closed with absorbable stitches.
Usually, you won’t have to stay in the hospital overnight and you can be discharged once the general anaesthesia has sufficiently worn off.
Recovery
After the procedure you can expect mild discomfort, bruising, redness and swelling in the treated area. This will diminish over several days to weeks and most patients find that any discomfort is easily controlled with simple pain relief medications.
We recommend that you stay hydrated and wear your special compression garments as often as possible. You will have a follow-up appointment to assess your healing and recovery.
Are there any risks or complications from liposuction?
Although considered relatively safe, there are potential risks and complications:
- Change in skin sensation
- Irregular pigmentation
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Pain
Mr Siddiqui will discuss all of these at your first appointment.

Frequently Asked questions
You can read through all our most commonly asked questions about liposuction in Manchester below.
Experienced liposuction surgeons are adept at creating small incisions that leave barely visible scars once you are fully healed. Your incision sites will initially be a little pink however, these fade over 3 to 6 months and are difficult to see.
We recommend you eat a healthy and nutritious diet after liposuction surgery. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle helps ensure a successful treatment and long-lasting noticeable results, especially for your abdomen area.
During the procedure, you are given local and general anaesthesia which means you will not feel any immediate pain or discomfort. The recovery period can be uncomfortable, especially at incision sites and the treatment area. Most patients find with simple analgesia this pain is well-controlled and easily managed.
Recovery time for liposuction will vary depending on the treatment targeted areas. Generally, your surgeon will recommend you wear a compression garment for 1 to 2 months, to return to work within a few days and to your normal activities within a few weeks.
By outlining your expectations and talking through the realistic results, possible side effects and recovery with your surgeon, you will be able to make an informed decision about whether getting liposuction is worth the money.
Liposuction for purely cosmetic reasons is not covered by the NHS. However, if it is being used to treat specific conditions like lymphoedema or lipoedema the NHS may cover part of the cost of the procedure.
How much fat can be removed with liposuction depends on which area is being treated. For example, the abdomen area can have more fat removed than with a chin or neck liposuction. The amount of fat that can be safely removed in one session is between 6 to 8 lbs.
Lipo is not a surgery for the loss of weight, rather it is for contouring and shaping your figure. That being said, surgeons can safely remove up to 8 lbs of fat in one session. If you require more fat to be removed, you will need additional procedures.
It is important that you understand lipo is not a weight-loss surgery. It can be performed near the end of your journey to help remove the last few pounds of resistant or hard-to-shed fat and for body contouring.
Liposuction can give you a flatter stomach and toned physique, however, it is not guaranteed. If you have larger amounts of fat to be removed or excessive skin in the abdominal area you can combine lipo with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) for optimal results.
Yes, once lipo has removed the fat it is permanently gone. However, if you gain weight after your procedure the remaining fat cells will increase in size and make you look larger.
You can retain your shape after surgery by following the advice of your surgeon and embracing a healthy lifestyle. Drinking plenty of water, eating a healthy diet and participating in regular exercise help maintain the lipo results.
If your skin has lost elasticity or a significant amount of fat is removed, you may find you have skin that becomes loose or saggy. During your first appointment, Mr Siddiqui will conduct a physical examination and be able to inform you if this is likely to happen. He may recommend an additional procedure to remove excessive skin.
No liposuction is not a cure for cellulite. However, the shaping and contouring provided by lipo may decrease the appearance of existing cellulite.
