Expert breast reduction surgery for a well-proportioned figure

Here at Breast & Body Clinic in Manchester, breast reduction procedures are our speciality.

If you’re experiencing emotional or physical discomfort due to very large breasts, a breast reduction may help. A surgical procedure to reduce breast size and weight can also help restore a well-proportioned figure and improve comfort and confidence.

Contact us today to discuss your options for a breast reduction in Manchester.

What is a breast reduction and how is it performed?

A breast reduction (also called reduction mammoplasty) is a surgical procedure that removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin to create smaller, lighter, and more proportioned breasts. The procedure is typically performed under general anaesthetic and takes between two and four hours depending on the volume of tissue being removed and the surgical technique used. The most common technique is the inverted-T or ‘anchor’ incision, which allows for significant volume reduction and reshaping; for women requiring less extensive reduction, a ‘lollipop’ (vertical scar) technique may be appropriate, leaving smaller scars. As part of the procedure, the nipple and areola are usually repositioned higher on the breast to match the new, smaller breast shape — this is done while preserving blood supply and nerve connection to the nipple wherever possible. At Breast & Body Clinic, breast reductions are performed by Mr Aftab Siddiqui, an NHS Consultant Plastic Surgeon with over 22 years of experience in breast surgery and a 5-star rating across 124 verified reviews on RealSelf.

Breast Reduction

A breast reduction in Manchester reduces the size of very large breasts to achieve a more desirable and proportioned body shape.

Why have a breast reduction in Manchester?

Women opt for this surgery when they face the challenges of having excessively large breasts, including:

  • chronic shoulder and neck pain
  • back pain
  • posture problems
  • persistent skin irritation and rashes beneath the breasts and in the underarm area
  • limitations with physical activity
  • sleep disturbances or breathing difficulties when lying on the back
  • difficulty finding properly fitting clothing and bras, or bra straps cutting into shoulders
  • loss of self-confidence and self-esteem

What are the benefits of breast reduction surgery in Manchester?

Breast reduction surgery offers numerous benefits, including:

  • physical comfort: relief from back, neck, and shoulder pain often associated with larger breasts
  • enhanced body proportion: achieving a balanced and well-proportioned figure
  • improved confidence: boosted self-esteem and confidence in your appearance
  • increased mobility: easier physical activity and greater clothing options

If you are considering breast reduction in Manchester, it is important to discuss the risks and benefits with your surgeon prior to booking the procedure.

Can I get a breast reduction on the NHS?

Breast reduction surgery is available on the NHS in some cases, but the criteria are strict and waiting times can be very long — often 18 months to several years depending on local commissioning policy. To be considered for NHS breast reduction, patients typically need to demonstrate that very large breasts are causing significant physical symptoms (such as documented back, neck or shoulder pain that has not responded to physiotherapy and weight management), that they are within a healthy BMI range (commonly under 25 or 27, depending on the local Clinical Commissioning Group), and that conservative measures including supportive bras and weight loss have been tried without resolving symptoms. Many women do not meet these thresholds, or are unwilling to wait years for surgery, and choose private breast reduction instead. At Breast & Body Clinic, breast reduction is offered privately with no GP referral required, no BMI cut-off as restrictive as the NHS, and surgery typically scheduled within weeks of the consultation rather than years. Patients who have been refused on the NHS but still wish to proceed are welcome to book a private consultation with Mr Siddiqui to discuss their options.

Will I be able to breastfeed after breast reduction surgery?

Many women are able to breastfeed after breast reduction, but breastfeeding capability cannot be guaranteed and depends on the surgical technique used and individual anatomy. Modern breast reduction techniques aim to preserve the milk ducts and the nerve and blood supply to the nipple by leaving the nipple attached to the underlying breast tissue on a ‘pedicle’ rather than detaching and re-grafting it. This technique — used routinely by Mr Siddiqui — gives the best chance of preserved breastfeeding function. However, even with the best surgical technique, the volume of glandular tissue available is reduced and some milk-duct connections will be unavoidably affected. Many women find they can breastfeed but may need to supplement with formula; others breastfeed without difficulty; a smaller number find they cannot produce sufficient milk after reduction. If you are planning future pregnancies, this is one of the most important conversations to have during your consultation — Mr Siddiqui will discuss surgical options designed to maximise the chance of successful breastfeeding and may, in some cases, recommend deferring surgery until you have completed your family.

What is the recovery time after breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction has a longer recovery than many other breast procedures because of the volume of tissue removed and the extent of the incisions. Most patients are able to return to light daily activities within 1–2 weeks and to desk-based work between 2 and 4 weeks after surgery, depending on individual healing. More physical activity can be gradually resumed from 4–6 weeks, and strenuous exercise — particularly running, heavy lifting and chest exercises — should be avoided for at least 6–8 weeks. A surgical bra or post-surgical sports bra is worn day and night for 6 weeks to support the breasts during healing. Swelling, bruising and tenderness are most pronounced in the first 2 weeks and reduce significantly over 4–6 weeks; final breast shape continues to settle for 6–12 months as scars mature and tissues relax. Scars from breast reduction are permanent but typically fade significantly over 12–18 months with proper scar care. Mr Siddiqui and the Breast & Body Clinic team provide detailed scar-care guidance and follow-up appointments throughout recovery, and Mr Siddiqui personally remains contactable by WhatsApp for any concerns during the healing period.

Is breast reduction surgery safe and what are the risks?

Breast reduction is a routinely performed and well-established surgical procedure with a strong safety record when performed by an experienced consultant plastic surgeon. As with any surgery, however, there are risks that should be discussed openly during consultation. General surgical risks include bleeding, infection, adverse reaction to anaesthesia, and blood clots (deep vein thrombosis) — all of which are managed with careful pre-operative assessment and standard hospital protocols. Risks specific to breast reduction include changes in nipple sensation (most commonly temporary, occasionally permanent), reduced or lost ability to breastfeed, asymmetry between the breasts, delayed wound healing (particularly at the T-junction of the incision in larger reductions), permanent scarring, and very rarely loss of part of the nipple-areola complex due to compromised blood supply. Smokers, patients with very high BMI, and patients with poorly controlled diabetes have a higher risk of wound-healing complications and may be advised to address these factors before surgery. At Breast & Body Clinic, all risks are discussed in detail during consultation, and Mr Siddiqui’s 22 years of experience and over 9,000 procedures performed give patients confidence in the safety of their care.

What is the difference between breast reduction and a breast lift?

Breast reduction and a breast lift (mastopexy) are similar surgical procedures and use overlapping techniques, but they address different problems. Breast reduction removes a significant volume of breast tissue, fat and skin to make the breasts smaller and lighter — patients usually present because their breasts are uncomfortably large or causing physical symptoms. A breast lift removes excess skin and reshapes the existing breast tissue to raise sagging breasts to a higher, perkier position, but does not significantly change the volume or weight of the breast — patients usually present because their breasts have lost shape after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss or with age. Many breast reductions include a lift component as part of the same procedure (because removing tissue without lifting would leave the breasts low and saggy), and many breast lifts include a small reduction to refine the shape. The right procedure for an individual patient depends on whether the primary problem is size and weight, position and shape, or both. At Breast & Body Clinic, Mr Siddiqui will examine your breasts during consultation and recommend whether reduction, mastopexy, or a combined approach is right for you.

Will I have visible scars after breast reduction?

Yes — breast reduction surgery does leave permanent scars, and being honest about this is an important part of the consultation. The most common scar pattern is the inverted-T or ‘anchor’ shape: a scar around the areola, a vertical line down to the breast crease, and a horizontal line along the breast crease itself. For smaller reductions, a ‘lollipop’ (vertical scar) technique without the horizontal element may be possible, leaving fewer scars. Initially, scars appear red or pink and slightly raised; over the first 12–18 months they typically fade significantly, becoming flat, pale and far less noticeable. Most women find that the scars are easily hidden by bras, swimwear and most clothing. Scar appearance can be improved with diligent scar care — including silicone sheets or gels, sun protection for the first year, and gentle massage once the wound has fully closed — and Mr Siddiqui provides a detailed scar-care protocol after surgery. For patients prone to keloid or hypertrophic scarring, additional measures including steroid injections may be recommended. The trade-off between scar visibility and the relief from physical symptoms is a key part of the consultation discussion.

Does breast reduction help back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain?

Yes — pain relief is one of the most consistently reported benefits of breast reduction surgery. Multiple clinical studies have shown that the majority of women undergoing breast reduction experience significant or complete resolution of breast-related back, neck and shoulder pain within months of surgery. The mechanism is straightforward: very large or heavy breasts shift the body’s centre of gravity forward and place sustained load on the upper spine, the trapezius muscles and the shoulder joints. Removing several hundred grams of tissue from each breast restores a more neutral posture and immediately reduces this load. Many patients also report relief from related symptoms, including grooves and indentations from bra straps, headaches caused by upper-back tension, and skin irritation or rashes under the breast crease (intertrigo). Pain relief from breast reduction is often felt within the first few weeks of recovery and continues to improve as posture and core strength rebuild. During consultation at Breast & Body Clinic, Mr Siddiqui will examine the relationship between your breast size and your symptoms and discuss the realistic improvement you can expect.

Who is a good candidate for breast reduction surgery?

Good candidates for breast reduction are women whose breasts are causing physical or emotional symptoms — chronic back, neck or shoulder pain; deep grooves in the shoulders from bra straps; rashes or skin irritation under the breast; difficulty exercising; or persistent self-consciousness about breast size. Patients should be in good general health, at a stable weight, non-smokers (or willing to stop smoking for at least 6 weeks before and after surgery), and have realistic expectations about scarring and what the procedure can achieve. Breast tissue that is predominantly glandular (rather than fatty) tends to give the best long-term results. Most patients are over 18 with fully developed breasts; women considering future pregnancies should discuss timing and the impact on breastfeeding with their surgeon. During your free consultation at Breast & Body Clinic, Mr Siddiqui will examine your breast tissue, assess your symptoms, review your medical history, and confirm whether breast reduction is the right procedure for your circumstances.

FAQs

Incision placement can vary based on surgical techniques and your individual needs. Common incision options include around the areola (periareolar), vertically down from the areola to the breast crease (lollipop), or using an anchor incision.

Breast reduction results are typically long-lasting. However, factors such as ageing, weight gain, and pregnancy can influence breast shape and size over time.

In some cases, lifestyle changes, physical therapy, or wearing well-fitted bras with proper support may alleviate discomfort associated with large breasts. However, this may not be enough to reduce the impact of large, heavy breasts.

Breast reduction surgery typically removes excess tissue and fat permanently. While breasts can change due to factors like excess weight gain or hormonal fluctuations, the removed tissue does not grow back.

The extent of reduction in cup size varies depending on your initial bust size, the surgical technique, and individual goals. On average, breast reduction can reduce cup size by one to several sizes. Your surgeon will discuss the expected outcome during your consultation.

A decade or two ago many women were unable to breastfeed after their breast reductions. But today, with surgeons using techniques that preserve the function of lactation-related structures, it’s highly likely you will be able to breastfeed.
