Full abdominoplasty
This option is for patients who need the most correction. The incision (cut) is made at the bikini line and the length of the scar depends on the amount of extra skin. Your surgeon will then manipulate and shape the skin and muscle as needed.
You will also have an incision around your navel (belly button) with this procedure because it is necessary to free your navel from surrounding tissue. Drainage tubes may or may not be placed under your skin. These will be removed in a few days as your surgeon sees fit.
Partial or mini tummy tuck
Partial abdominoplasties are done with shorter incisions and are often performed on people who have less excess skin. Your belly button most likely won’t be moved during this type of procedure. Your skin will be separated between the line of the incision and your belly button. This procedure generally takes one to two hours.
Extended abdominoplasty
This surgery involves the back area. When there is a lot of excess fat in the back as well as the abdomen, you may have either liposuction of the back or circumferential abdominoplasty. The latter procedure allows for the removal of both skin and fat from the hip and back areas, which improves the shape of your body from all sides.
What to do before tummy tuck surgery
An abdominoplasty is a major surgical procedure and requires some preparation to ensure everything goes perfectly. Your doctor should provide you with a list of dos and don’ts to be followed as part of your preparation for this treatment:
- Stick to a healthy diet
- Keep a watch on your health
- Get involved in healthy relaxation activities
- Don’t use any form of tobacco
- Maintain a stable and healthy weight for as long as possible before your procedure

Consultation
Mr Siddiqui provides a personalised and comprehensive consultation where we will discuss your medical history, conduct a physical examination and talk about your goals and expectations. You will also be provided with pre-surgery advice that we strongly recommend you follow for optimal results from your surgery.
Pre-Surgery
Mr Siddiqui advises patients to stick to a healthy diet, avoid smoking and alcohol for at least a week before treatment (the longer the better), and to stop taking herbal medication, aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication.
We also advise you to arrange for someone to drive you home after your surgery and to help care for you in the first few days.
Procedure
On the day of your surgery, you will be given a general anaesthetic, and incisions will be made around your abdomen and back to remove excess skin and tighten muscles. Liposuction can also be used to remove excess fat. Generally, with full abdominoplasty procedures, you will need a new belly button created. All incisions are then closed with dissolvable stitches and your surgeon may wrap your abdominal area and back in an elastic bandage or support garment.
Recovery
Once the general anaesthesia and local numbing anaesthetic wear off you will feel tender, tight and discomfort to the incision sites and the muscles that have been pulled together.
During the first week, we recommend you take pain relief on a regular basis and rest. After your second week, we expect this discomfort to slowly subside as your body heals.
Mr Siddiqui will arrange follow-up appointments during this recovery period to check on your progress.

A standard tummy tuck, or full abdominoplasty, involves an incision being made along the bikini line, extending hip to hip and around your belly button, targeting your lower and upper abdomen. An extended abdominoplasty used the same technique, except the incisions extend from your hip around to your back to target not just your abdominal area but your waist and back too.
A mini, or partial abdominoplasty, is performed using short incisions and are ideal for those people who don’t have as much excess abdominal skin. These surgical procedures target the smaller area of your lower abdomen.
Our plastic surgeons advise that this procedure can take anywhere from 2 to 5 hours, depending on the amount of excess skin removed, muscles to be tightened and if they include liposuction. Mr Siddiqui and his team will be able to provide further insight into the length of surgery once a treatment plan is confirmed.
There are several different types of abdominoplasty:

Yes! Men can have an extended abdominoplasty. This procedure can benefit both men and women who are feeling self-conscious of loose, sagging skin and separated muscles from dramatic weight loss or the natural ageing process.
As with any surgery, there are risks to a circumferential tummy tuck. There is a risk of bleeding, infection, haematoma, pain or delayed healing. Our aesthetic plastic surgeons at Breast and Body Clinic ensure that you understand all risks and potential complications of this procedure at your initial appointment.
Full recovery after an extended abdominoplasty can take 6 to 8 weeks. You will have several follow-up appointments during this time to check on your recovery and healing and to provide further advice and recommendations.
We strongly recommend at least 2 weeks off work, or longer if you have a physical job such as a labourer or nurse, after an extended abdominoplasty surgery.
We advise you to rest for the first week, and if given the all-clear by your surgeon, you can resume light exercise in the second week after your surgery. We expect that by week 4 to 6 you can increase the amount of exercise you are doing, but avoid strenuous activity until your surgeon clears it.
By about 2 to 3 weeks after your surgery, you should be able to drive again. However, please check in with your surgical team for up-to-date advice based upon your individual surgery and recovery.
Yes, you can have an extended abdominoplasty if you have had a c-section birth. However, we advise you to wait until your body has fully recovered prior to having any other surgical procedure. You should discuss this with your surgeon for further advice.
We recommend you avoid having an extended abdominoplasty if you are planning on having children. During pregnancy, your abdominal muscles and skin stretch to accommodate your growing baby, this can cause muscle separation and put pressure on any scars from your surgery.
Exercise and a healthy diet will help keep your stomach muscles in shape after your surgery. Further advice for long-term recovery and optimisation of your results will be provided at your appointment.
There is no guarantee that an extended abdominoplasty will remove stretch marks. However, as the skin is pulled taut and the underlying tissues manipulated for firmer, tighter contours these stretch marks may reduce in appearance over time, even if they don’t disappear completely.
Yes, you can combine an extended abdominoplasty with another procedure, such as our Mummy Makeover procedures. Many people will also have breast surgery (augmentation, reductions or lifts) or liposuction at the same time.
