About Inverted Nipple Correction
Inverted nipple is an irregularity in which a woman&aos;s nipples point more inwards than outwards. The nipples are connected to the underlying breast tissue by means of tiny tubes called ducts. Nipple inversion occurs when these ducts are too short and pull the nipple inwards. Preparing For Your Inverted Nipple Correction Surgery
After a careful history and examination, We will carefully advise you on the procedure for the correction of inverted nipples that suits you best. The majority of the surgery require a general anaesthetic. It is important that if anything changes with your health that you make contact with us. You should ideally stop smoking 6 weeks prior to surgery and stop taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs before surgery.
You may return to work the following day, and light cardio exercise may be resumed three days after the procedure. The main restriction is from compression for ten days to two weeks after the procedure, during which time you should not wear a bra.
Post Operative Activities
- No stretching arms for the first 6 weeks.
- Normal daily activities like driving etc are allowed after the first week.
- Body exercises can be starts from the 6 week onwards.
Can you wear a bra after Inverted Nipple surgery?
You will be asked to wear a compression garment for up to two weeks following the post-surgical procedure to keep your breasts in place whilst your scars are healing. Your surgeon will remove stitches roughly five days after the operation. You can also wear normal bra again but before that you should take advise from your surgeon.

Inverted nipple is an irregularity in which a nipples point more inwards than outwards. It may be noticeable from childhood or develop over time and results from breast tissue that pinches the base of the nipple, limiting stretch and movement.
The severity of their condition often determines inverted nipple surgery candidates. Physicians often utilize a three-point scale to assess the severity of the inversion and determine whether surgical treatment is necessary and would adequately resolve the issue.
Inverted nipples can be corrected with a minor surgical procedure. This minor procedure is usually performed under local anesthetic, although some patients prefer to be totally asleep under a general anesthetic. In either case there is no pain during the procedure.
Every operation has risks and complications but these are all very rare with nipple correction surgery. Such risks include infection, bleeding, loss of sensation and inability to breastfeed.
If you have symptoms like newly inverted nipple, lump or thickness in your breast, dimples or other skin changes on your breast for a long time then it could be a sign of breast cancer as nipple retraction can occur when the tumour attacks the duct behind the nipple, pulling it in. If you notice these changes then you should consult with your surgeon.
Many women worry that their breasts and/or nipples are not the right size or shape for breastfeeding but it may be possible for breastfeeding with the inverted nipple before the procedure. It depends on the severity of the issue as it is very much difficult to breastfeeding if a woman is suffering from the grade-3 type of inverted nipple issue.
You may experience a diminished or loss of sensitivity of the nipples and the skin of your breast in the primary stages of inverted nipple surgery but everything will be returned to normal once healed and the nipple will respond to touch and cold as usual.
Inverted nipple correction is simply performed with the patient under local anaesthesia, but in some cases, when inverted nipple surgery is combined with another procedure such as breast enlargement/augmentation, the surgery is performed under general anaesthesia.
Nipple correction surgery usually takes less than 1 hour under local anaesthetic.
Most patients experience one to two weeks of acute recovery following an inverted nipple repair surgery. You will have mild discomfort for 1 to 2 days. You can do cardio activity but should avoid strenuous activity for one to two weeks. Most of the patients get fully recovered within four weeks.
Having a shower and getting your sutures wet may be permitted by your surgeon after the dressings (and drains) have been removed but it depends on what type of nipple correction procedure you have which will determine how long you have to wait to before taking the bath. However, if you’re feeling up to it, you can take bath 1-2 weeks after surgery as long as you keep your sutures dry.
After the inverted nipple surgery, you should protect your nipples from UV rays as much as possible. If fresh scars are exposed to the sun, they will tend to become darker and take longer to fade. Your surgeon would advise you to keep scarring around the nipples covered and away from the sun for up to a year to avoid discolouring and hyperpigmentation.
Medications and alcohol may interact with the residual anaesthetic and prescription pain medicine. Alcohol also dilates blood vessels and may increase the risk of postoperative bleeding. It is recommended to avoid alcohol for 48 hours after having any type of breast surgery and restrict your alcohol intake for the first month.
