After significant weight loss, loose skin does not tighten on its own. No cream, peptide, supplement or non-surgical skin-tightening treatment removes it — surgery is the only option that does. Which operation you need depends on where the loose skin sits: an apronectomy or abdominoplasty for the abdomen (from £10,000 for a full tummy tuck, from £12,000 for a Fleur de Lis), arm reduction (from £8,000), thigh lift (from £8,900), or a total body lift (from £17,500).Will loose skin tighten on its own after weight loss?
No. Skin that has been stretched over a long period loses elasticity, and once weight is lost the excess remains. How much is left depends on how much weight was lost, over what period, your age, and your skin quality before the weight gain. Non-surgical skin-tightening treatments can improve mild laxity. They do not remove a significant apron of skin, and any provider suggesting otherwise is describing a different problem to the one most post-weight-loss patients have.

GLP-1 medications such as tirzepatide (Mounjaro) and semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) can produce rapid and substantial weight loss, and a growing number of our patients come to us with loose skin after using them. The surgical considerations are broadly the same as after bariatric surgery, with two differences that matter: the speed of loss, and whether the medication is continued.
What is an apronectomy, and how is it different to a tummy tuck?
An apronectomy removes the overhanging apron of skin and fat from the lower abdomen. It does not tighten the abdominal muscles and it does not reposition the navel, which is what distinguishes it from a full abdominoplasty. For patients whose main concern is a skin apron causing rubbing, soreness or recurrent skin infection, it is often the more appropriate operation.
What is a Fleur de Lis tummy tuck?
A Fleur de Lis abdominoplasty adds a vertical incision to the standard horizontal one, forming an inverted T. The vertical component allows skin to be removed from side to side as well as up and down, which matters for patients who have lost a large amount of weight and have excess width as well as excess length. The trade-off is a vertical scar up the centre of the abdomen. It starts from £12,000.
Is excess skin removal available on the NHS?
Sometimes. Where excess skin causes recurrent infection, ulceration or significant functional problems, NHS funding may be available, and criteria differ between local commissioning areas. Your GP can advise whether you are likely to meet them. Purely cosmetic body contouring is not routinely funded.
